Pay Per Click Wisdom - Don't Test Too Much!

There's a reason that the traditional A/B split testing model is popular, it makes life easy for the person testing because you are only testing 2 different factors.  There are other methods of testing (like Taguchi for example) in which you can test a multitude of variables but it's best to stick with basics when testing.

For example:

  1. Headline A to Headline B
  2. Subheadings
  3. Ad copy

When you try to test too many things on your pay per click campaigns, you are puttting yourself into a position where you can make some drastic, costly errors when interpreting data.

PPC has always been a fast-moving channel. The search engines (and lately, social channels) are continually innovating, adding great new products and features for PPC advertisers to try. In the past month alone, there have been Search Engine Watch columns about inventory feeds, interest category targeting, sitelinks, and remarketing.

And this is just Google. Microsoft adCenter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and second-tier PPC engines are adding features all the time, too.

The really great thing about PPC is that nearly everything can be tested. In addition to testing ad copy and keywords, you can test all of the features listed above, and more. Landing pages, ad formats (for display), ad extensions – all of these, and more, can be tested to learn what drives the best results for advertisers.

Melissa Mackey makes this point very well in a post over at Search Engine World click here to read the full article!  She then goes on and talks about the pitfalls of trying to use all the latest and greatest bells and whistles in your advertising accounts.

Michigan Pay Per Click Advertising - Creating a Winning Ad Campaign

Using Google Adwords to promote your Michigan based business can be a rewarding or punishing experience for most small businesses. Rewarding in the sense that you can bring highly qualified traffic to your site. Punishing in the aspect that you can lose a lot of money very quickly if you or your employees don't know what they are doing!

Before you hand over your credit card number to Google it's best to make sure that you have a very clear course of action for your prospective customers / visitors to take. In our minds there are only two desired actions for any commercial website that are acceptable when running ads.

Desired actions:

  • To gather lead information (collect leads) OR contacts that wish to receive more information about your product or service.
  • To make sales (self explanitory).

EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO online should be tracked however, this is not always possible. For example, if I'm trying to optimize my site for the search engines, I have a URL that I want to promote to raise my rankings. The motive here is to raise my search engine rankings, I have other means of tracking that kind of information (SEO Elite for example) and the tracking program is not necessary. When optimizing I don't use a link that a tracking programs gives me because I don't want my tracking link becoming popular, I want the page that the customer is landing on to become popular.

I do use tracking programs to track ads that I'm paying for, it's the best practice to get return-on-investment figures. If you have the ability to track sales separate from leads you can actually measure how effective your sales staff is at converting these leads into paying customers and make every effort to increase your conversion rates. Additionally, when you look at your online sales figures you can make improvements to the copywriting on your pages to convert more leads to sales.

Now that you have the desired course of action and a tracking program in place, start testing!

Using a small budget, create some ads in Adwords that will send very targeted users to your site and figure out your starting metrics. Since we have determined that a sale or a lead will consitute a 'conversion' you should now have some metrics to improve upon. If your results are diasterous, don't lose heart now. The best that I would hope to do at this stage is break even! Now is the time to start adjusting your web copy and measure the effectiveness of your sales staff.

Managing your PPC Country List

There are many ways expert internet marketers utilize Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising to make money on the internet today. Without question, the US market is the major player when it comes to generating income online. However, in this article we are going to focus on markets other than the US, and teach you how to become financially successful in them.

We are going to discuss two distinctly different types of businesses, the first will be a real estate agency, and the second will be a small business person or firm that must make an immediate Return on their Investment (ROI).

A real estate agency does not need to make a profit on their PPC advertising right away, if they are building a list. As their list gets larger and larger overtime, they will eventually see their income skyrocket. If you are not familiar with a list, please research our site since we have discussed its importance previously.

If a Detroit real estate agency starts a PPC campaign, of course they are going to concentrate on Detroit itself. The downside to this is there will be a great deal of competition, and the cost per click will be very high. The most successful PPC marketers today got that way because they think “Out of the Box”.

When you have a PPC campaign, one of the alternatives you can choose from, is the country you wish to advertise in. So, what would be good locations, other than Detroit, Michigan, or the US to advertise “Homes of Sale in Detroit” in? Let’s think, who is coming to do business in Detroit, and what countries are they coming from?

You would think the car industry would be a good place to start, and they should be coming from Japan, China, England, Italy, France, and Germany to mention but a few. Now if a real estate agency advertised in Japan with a heading “Detroit Homes for Sale”, are they going to get very many clicks on that ad?

No, of course not, but are the people that do click on it super hot prospects”? They are as hot as it gets, since those people more than likely will be moving to Detroit shortly. Next, what would the real estate agencies cost per click be? It would be pretty much as low as it gets, since what other Detroit firms could possibly be smart enough to advertise in Japan?

Would a Detroit real estate agency make money utilizing this strategy their very first month, probably not? But, after a while, when they were able to identify and refine the countries where a large number of business people are relocating to Detroit from; and they are the only firm actively promoting themselves in this market; it could certainly turn into a widely successful financial venture for them.

Next, let’s examine a small company that must make a ROI immediately selling a very distinct product that has a very well defined market, such as a pitching machine that helps baseball players improve their hitting skills. Most people would think of this as only an American sport, and they must only advertise in the US. WOW, would they be wrong.

Once again, let’s examine the countries outside of the US that love baseball. You can start with Japan, Twain, Korea, Dominican Republic, Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. Most of you know that the people of Japan love their baseball, but you have to be scratching your heads at counties like Germany, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.

Why would these be great markets for pitching machines? Germany would a good place because there is a very large contingent of US service personnel and their families stationed there. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait would be great locations because of all of the US based oil workers and their families residing there.

So, if the company or individual that is promoting pitching machines is not using PPC to advertise in these markets, they are without question leaving profits on the table. Is there a great deal of competition in these markets for this product? No, is the cost to advertise there high? No, probably as low as it gets once again.

When somebody clicks on one of their ads from these locations are they a great prospect? They are almost certainly as good as they get on the internet today.

The people and companies that are making a ton of money online today are not doing it only in the US market. They are researching, understanding, and investing in countries nobody else regards as worthy prospects

If you have not be doing as well as you like with your recent PPC campaigns, it certainly could be that your thinking is far too rigid, as opposed to thinking out of the box and being creative. Why not step back, take a look at your product or service, and ask yourself, what other countries other than the US could benefit from what I have to offer? Once you do that, hopefully your financial results will change very quickly for the positive.

Your PPC Research is Completed, Now let’s Make some Money

If you have done this properly, you started with a list 100 to 200 keywords, and you have now narrowed it down to somewhere between 1 to 5, that are very profitable. Yes, more than likely you lost some money. But, what you have accomplished will now allow you to start raking in the big bucks.

To know which ones are making you money, you should use Google Analysis’s, as well as the information Google provides in its PPC control panel. What you want to do now is expand your advertising across the entire internet.

Each and every site that offers PPC advertising, such as Yahoo, YouTube, FaceBook, Tweeter, and Bing to mention but a few, is where you are going to now place additional advertisements. Google’s visitors are known to be highly sophisticated internet users, and very selective buyers.

What this means, is that if you were able to make money with these keywords on Google, your profits should explode once you start utilizing other sites where their clients are thought to be a little less defensive when it comes to purchasing something online.

This is exactly how the most advanced and successful PPC marketers research their markets, and later increase their advertising budgets to bring home enormous profits.

The Number One Way to use PPC and Make Money

As we discussed in our previous articles about PPC, the cost per click has risen drastically over the past few years. Which is the bad news, the good news is that it is still possible for the little guy to use it, and be successful. That is, if you know how, which you will learn below.

The first thing you need to do is only target “Buying Keywords”. If you do not know what they are, we have discussed them in detail in other articles on our site, which you can research. Second, you are more than likely going to need to lose some money as you determine which “Buying Keywords” are working for you, and which are not.

Third, hopefully you will be able to narrow your keyword list down considerably overtime, till it gets to the point that you are only using the ones that are profitable for you. Once you get here, it is now possible to really start making very good money.

Please be sure to read the fourth article in this series, where we will let you know how to take the keywords that are working for you, and turn them into a big time money making machine.

Why PPC Costs have Increased so Drastically

When PPC advertising was first introduced it was possible to make money using it to promote virtually any product or service on the internet. That is certainly not the case anymore. Many large corporations realized that because of PPC’s features, they were able to specifically target their potential customers much more cost effectively than other forms of advertising.

Because of this they shifted a sizeable portion of their advertising budgets away from television, radio, and newsprint to the internet. The law of supply and demand explains why PPC cost increased so much due to this reallocation of funds.

Today there are more mega sized corporations with large advertising budgets bidding on keywords that were once the private domain of the little guy. This has made it very difficult, if not impossible in certain cases, for a small business to still use this advertising strategy successfully.

This is the second part of a four part series on PPC advertising. Please be sure to read the next article where we discuss how you can still use PPC, and make money with it.

How to Succeed at Pay Per Click (PPC) Advertising

Most, if not all people are familiar with Google Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising. What not everybody realizes though, is that you also engage in (PPC) advertising at other websites like Yahoo, YouTube, and FaceBook.

(PPC) is a very simple concept to understand. Essentially, you will create a small text advertisement which will hopefully appear on web pages that are relevant to the product or service you are promoting. When a visitor to that web page clicks on your ad they will then be redirected to your website, and you will be charged a fee for that click.

When this type of advertising was in its infancy each click cost as little as one or two cents. This made it very easy for the small business person that required a return on their investment (ROI) to be successful with it. That is not the case anymore, since the cost of clicks for most keywords has risen significantly.

This is the first part of a four part article series, please be sure to read the following four pieces.
